Baning the word 'Retarded'?

"It’s the slur raising a ruckus from the White House to Hollywood, and today friends of the intellectually disabled will stage a pledge drive at the State House to ban the word “retard” in Massachusetts."

I personally don't use retarded when i talk, it just is like saying something is gay, i just don't. Banning a word is not the direction we should be going in right now, nor is it ever. If you can ban 'retarded', why can't they ban other slurs like 'nigger' or 'chinc'? Well sense that is rolling, the words 'fuck', 'asshole' and 'shit' also cause a ruckus so we should do away with then also. This sets the stage for an onslaught for new forms of control and censorship.

I am not sure by what they mean by 'ban', if it is a fine, than all that stands.
If it is just trying to get people to not say it because it is offensive, then they are misleading and what i said before doesn't really work.
